Civic Engagement in Action Series: Stewardship of Public Lands

The Yellowstone Experience

Beginning in 2005, faculty representatives from participating AASCU, institutions have been annually invited to spend a week in Yellowstone National Park with our partner, the Yellowstone Association, studying controversies about wolves, bison, snowmobiles, and grizzlies. We begin the week examining the science and history of the controversies, listening to scientists and Park rangers. Then at the end of the week, we interview local citizens on both sides of the issues, including political activists, business people, ranchers, and ordinary citizens. The four main controversies explored are over the management of bison, grizzly bears, wolves and the use of snowmobiles.

Participants return to their campuses to design programs for students in relation to public lands. Some focus on the controversies in the Yellowstone ecosystem, while others focus on local, regional, or national public land and resource issues.

Elliott Kennerson, the documentary filmmaker who produced Mammoth to Mammoth, has uploaded a series of videos detailing many of the cases examined by faculty in the Yellowstone Experience. The films, produced by graduate students in Montana State's Science and Natural History Filmmaking program, explore some of the major debates in relation to Yellowstone National Park management and its wider natural corridor, sometimes called the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Stewardship of Public Lands: A Handbook for Educators (2010, monograph)

GNED 495 Summer 2010 (Yellowstone)

This interdisciplinary course seeks to engage students in the analysis of contentious public issues (focused particularly on natural resources) using multiple disciplinary lenses.  In so doing, students are challenged to apply their disciplinary training and work with their knowledge and skills developed through their General Education program to evaluate the ways in which citizens have addressed these difficult issues.  In turn, students transfer what they have learned about citizens acting in other places to a complex public issue in our own community.  They practice the application of skills, particularly writing for the public arena, toward greater understanding and appreciation of the local issue and the lives of active citizens.
